James T. Hepburn's tree for the Hepburn family goes back to John Hepburn "born at Galston, Ayshire, 1781 died at Lanark, Scotland. He was married about 1809, (name unknown) and
at the battle of Waterloo in 1815, in Scots Grey Regiment." This page documents further research that I have done up to January 2006. John Hepburn's discharge papers from the Scots Greys in 1817 lists him as enlisting the 2nd of December 1803 at the age of twenty-two. The document further shows that he was born in Galston. This corresponds with the information we had from the old family tree and corresponds with the family information shown below. |

Where was Aird ? |
'Aird' appears to have been a farm located in the Parish of Riccarton southwest of Galston. It may have had a mill at one time, or the mill reference may be to Shaws Mill located a short distance away on the Cessnock Water (river). Perhaps part of the Dallars House estate. The reference to Netherlands in the OPR also seems to point to Aird Farm. Netherlands is a small town East of Aird Farm. |
