1. James Covell of Malahide - by Al Covell, another Covell researcher The 1881 Canadian census lists James, Mary, Abram, Joseph and Catherine Covell living in Malahide, Elgin East, Ontario. Ages are given as 77, 58, 24, 22 and 19, ethnicity as German, religion as Baptist. Information found on Family History Library Film 1375902. James Covell, Jr, born 3-25-1804 in Hartford, NY is among those Covell's who moved to Canada. James and his family were probably gone from the USA very shortly after his desertion (from the Union Army) since the army probably looked with some disfavor on deserters, whatever their reason for leaving. Secondly, I've traced James' ancestors back to London, England in the late 1500's so his claim he was of German descent is more than just doubtful. I think James was trying to hide his ethnicity as the family roots in England are pretty well known. Many of the family were Baptists so the religion would ring true. I have never been able to learn anything more about James or his family after they moved to Canada so if anyone comes across anything about them I'd be grateful if they'd let me know. The following is from my Covell database. The 1860 Census for Steuben Co., NY (Under Rathbone and P.O. address of Addison, NY which is just west of Corning, NY) is rather revealing. It lists the following: Covell, James, Jr., age 56, occupation listed as Herb and Root doctor, Mary H., age 38, Ophelia, age 6, Cordelia, age 4, Abraham age 2 and Joseph B., age 1. Beulah Thompson (nee Miller) stated that Mary Ann was Native American. Mary Ann had a sister Catherine who married Oliver Perry Coleman. Given that the 1860 census finds him in the Addison, NY area I'd suspect he's buried somewhere in Stueben County. Possibly some of the Covell's in Bath are his descendents. Civil War records show James Covell, Jr. enlisting on 7-26-1862 in Addison, NY giving his age as 44. That is about 14 years younger than other records indicate. The 107th fought along side the 13th NJ throughout the war. At the Battle of Antietam they fought in the East Wood and Cornfields, where some of the heaviest casualties of the entire war occurred. At Gettysburg, the two Regt's were engaged at Culp's Hill where James was wounded. He later deserted when he found he would be transferred to Sherman's Army in Georgia. 2. James Covill of Norwich James Covill of Norwich, Ontario, died in October of 1820 leaving sundry goods and a son Reuben, who was a minor, but no last Will and Testament. On 30 April 1822, Jonathan Doan Sr. petitioned the surrogate court of the District of London to administer the Goods and Chattels, Rights and Credits of the said deceased. Reuben was a labourer in the town of Yarmouth at the time. The related papers to Estate #93 are kept at the University of Western Ontario Archives. They amount to 26 pages of inventory, accounts and receipts collected by Mr. Doan and reported to the Surrogate Court. Ruben was born about 1808 and married Matilda Wilson 3 Jan 1833 in the London District. No other information on the family is available at this time (Feb 2006). |
3. The Covell/Covill Families of Glanford There are three Covell families found in the 1881 census in Glanford. John Neal Covell and his wife Mary Ann Cook are both shown as born in England. All of the Covells in the Glanford area are children of John and Mary. John Neal Jr. is living with his parents and his second wife Almeda Shingles, as is Thomas, the youngest son of John and Mary. The second family in the Glanford census is son Robert George Covell and his wife Mary Jane Long and their five children. In 1901 they show up as Covill and in some LDS material it is Coville. The 1901 census indicates that Robert was born in England. The third family is that of son William Covell and Isabella Esther Robinson. This family moves to Shelburne (Grey East) by 1901. William is shown in both census returns as being born in England. There are no known links between these Covell families and the descendants of Simeon Covell. |
